February 27, 2009 TURKEY HILL DAIRY EXPANDS VOLUNTARY ICE CREAM RECALL TO INCLUDE "MOVIE NIGHT" FLAVOR
LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (February 27, 2009) - Turkey Hill Dairy of Lancaster County, Pa., is adding its Dynamic Duos Movie Night Ice Cream to its list of voluntarily recalled products because it contains peanut ingredients from the Plainview, Texas, facility of the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). The facility has been the focus of an ongoing Salmonella investigation by the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA). As part of the investigation, FDA administrators are now suggesting the recall of all products containing ingredients from PCA's Plainview, Texas, facility since 2005. Turkey Hill recalled six products in late January after the FDA expanded its investigation to include all peanuts processed by the PCA at its Blakely, Ga., plant since January 1, 2007. Salmonella is an organism, that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Details about the recall are as follows: Dynamic Duos Movie Night Ice Cream
This recall does NOT include any peanut butter Turkey Hill uses in its products. Turkey Hill products do not include any peanut butter or peanut paste produced by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). "Turkey Hill remains committed to our customers, the highest quality of our products, and food safety for our consumers" said Quintin Frey, president of Turkey Hill Dairy. "Yet we want to honor the FDA's request and for that reason, we have voluntarily recalled our Dynamic Duos Movie Night flavor." Dynamic Duos Movie Night is a new flavor and has limited production and distribution. The product has been distributed in very limited quantities to grocery, food and convenience stores in the following markets: Connecticut
"We continue to monitor this situation and make sure to honor the suggestions and precautionary measures provided by our nation's top food safety organizations," said Frey. January 20, 2009 Dear Turkey Hill Dairy Customers, On Saturday January 17, the FDA released a statement urging consumers to avoid eating cookies, cakes, ice cream, and other foods that contain peanut butter. This was in response to an ongoing Salmonella investigation centered around peanut butter and peanut paste. In response to the FDA's statement, Turkey Hill Dairy can confirm that none of our products contain peanut butter or peanut paste that was sourced from Peanut Corporation of America's Blakely, Georgia processing plant, the current focus of the FDA's investigation. This includes our complete line of Premium Ice Creams, Light Recipe® Ice Creams, All Natural Ice Creams, Frozen Yogurts, No Sugar Added Ice Creams, Duetto Frozen Dessert, Venice® Ice, Sherbet, Ice Cream Sandwich novelties, Ice Cream Cones novelties, and Ice Cream Cakes. Although some of our products contain peanuts sourced from Peanut Corporation of America, peanuts are not presently part of the FDA investigation or implicated in any illnesses. Regardless, Turkey Hill has tested these peanuts, and the resulting ingredients tested negative for salmonella before and after processing. These tests are part of those required as a requisite for all our ingredient vendors. As you know, Turkey Hill is committed to our customers and producing the highest quality products, which is why we will continue to monitor this situation and will quickly disseminate any additional information. If you have concerns or questions, please contact Turkey Hill at 1-800-MY DAIRY (1-800-693-2479) or email our Customer Relations Department from our Contact Us page. Sincerely,
Quintin Frey
