Local Clinton Girl Wins National Essay Contest

Seventh grader's essay written to honor 125th anniversary of Lady Liberty; stands out among more than 1,400 entries from across America

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (November 2, 2011) For many Americans, the Statue of Liberty represents limitless opportunities and a chance to make dreams come true. In that same spirit, Turkey Hill Dairy created the Lady Liberty Essay Contest, which asked middle school and high school students a simple question: What does liberty mean to you?

After receiving more than 1,400 entries, Turkey Hill Dairy is pleased to name Julia Rose Horan of Clinton as one of two $5,000 scholarship winners for her essay, "Liberty is Power." The contest was held as part of Turkey Hill's year-long celebration of Lady Liberty's 125th anniversary.

"We are proud of the several hundred students from across this great nation who took the time to submit their own personal essay on 'liberty,'" said Quintin Frey, president of Turkey Hill Dairy and the grandson of its founder. "It was hard to choose only two winners, but Julia's was one submission that stood out among the rest."

"Liberty is power," wrote Horan, a seventh-grader from Jared Eliot Middle School. "Not power over a country, or other people of any kind, but power over yourself."

Her essay explores an individual's liberty and one's freedom to determine a personal definition of this ideal-and to develop a set of related rules by which to live.

"The freedom to choose the action you take is complete and unconditional ..." Horan wrote. "Liberty is that freedom and control over yourself and what you choose to do."

When she graduates in 2017, Horan plans to attend college. To her, "The future is fun to think about" because she's interested in so many areas. She might study music and piano (she's been playing and taking lessons since she was four years old). She is also considering law school, but a life of medicine and healing appeals to her as well.

"We wish Julia the best in the future as she continues her education, and Turkey Hill is grateful for the opportunity to showcase her budding talent," said Frey.
