“Preserve A Farm”: Turkey Hill Campaign Raises More Than $90,000 To Save A 63-Acre Lancaster County Pumpkin Farm

Campaign was fueled by fan donations and matching funds from Turkey Hill

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (February 1, 2017) — Turkey Hill Dairy recently partnered with Lancaster Farmland Trust to raise funds to preserve a 63 acre pumpkin farm in Lancaster County. Collecting those funds was the goal of Turkey Hill Dairy’s "Preserve a Farm" program, and that goal was achieved, thanks to donations by fans and matching funds from Turkey Hill.

The year-long effort set out to raise $85,000 in celebration of Turkey Hill’s 85th anniversary — half from fans and half matched by Turkey Hill — and ended with a final donation of $90,883.

The fundraising effort was conducted in partnership with the Lancaster Farmland Trust, a private, nonprofit land trust that has preserved more than 29,000 acres of Lancaster County farmland since 1988. The Preserve a Farm campaign — and the foundation for Turkey Hill’s longstanding relationship with the Lancaster Farmland Trust — is rooted in the company’s own farming history.

"The farms here in Lancaster County are important to us for many reasons. They not only provide ingredients used in our products, but they’re our neighbors," said Turkey Hill President John Cox. "Farms are a big part of who we are as a community, and when we lose farms, we lose part of what makes Lancaster County so great."

Lancaster County is home to nearly 6,000 farms, 99 percent of which are family-owned. The farms employ more than 51,000 men and women and contribute more than $4 billion to the local economy.

Over the past two decades, Turkey Hill has donated more than $500,000 to the Lancaster Farmland Trust. Though that money has been used to preserve countless Lancaster County farms, this was the first campaign by Turkey Hill to preserve a specific farm.

"The Trust is grateful to Turkey Hill Dairy for their steadfast support of farmland preservation efforts," said Karen Martynick, executive director of Lancaster Farmland Trust. "Turkey Hill is committed to the local community and has demonstrated that commitment through this remarkable partnership with the Trust."

The East Lampeter Township farm is currently maintained by three generations of family members, and the funds raised will be used to help transition the farm to the youngest generation.
